16-2-2024 (BANGKOK) The Thailand men’s football team has achieved a remarkable ascent in the latest Fifa global rankings, climbing 12 places to secure the 101st position, according to the world football governing body’s announcement on Thursday.
The War Elephants’ rise in the rankings reflects their impressive performances at the recently concluded AFC Asian Cup tournament held in Qatar. Despite being widely anticipated to remain at the bottom of the group stage, the team defied expectations and advanced to the round of 16 as the second-best team in their group, with one victory and two losses.
The Football Association of Thailand expressed their satisfaction with the team’s progress in a Facebook post, attributing the rise in the rankings to their commendable displays at the Asian Cup.
Thailand currently holds the top spot among all Southeast Asian teams, followed by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore.
Meanwhile, Argentina maintains its position as the world’s best team, with France, the runners-up in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, trailing closely behind.
Looking ahead, Thailand is scheduled to face South Korea in the World Cup qualifiers, with the first leg taking place in Seoul on March 21, followed by the return leg at Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium five days later. At present, Thailand ranks second in Group C, trailing behind South Korea, with one victory and one loss. China and Singapore complete the group.
