8-12-2023 (BANGKOK) Thailand and China have jointly announced plans to fast-track discussions regarding the potential exemption of entry visas for travellers from both nations. The development was revealed following a meeting between Thai Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on Wednesday.
The discussions between the two foreign ministers delved into various aspects of the bilateral relationship, with a primary focus on strengthening ties. Additionally, the talks aimed at expediting the construction of a high-speed railway that would connect Thailand and China through Laos. Addressing transnational crimes was also on the agenda.
Expressing gratitude, Parnpree, who also holds the position of deputy prime minister, thanked the Chinese government for its assistance in repatriating Thai nationals stranded in Laukkaing, a town on the Myanmar border. The repatriation efforts were necessitated by a conflict between rebels and junta forces.
During the meeting, the Thai foreign minister extended an invitation to Wang, who serves as the director of the Chinese Communist Party’s Foreign Affairs Commission, to visit Thailand for formal discussions on bilateral issues. In return, Wang invited Parnpree to visit China.
Parnpree’s visit to Beijing was part of his attendance at the 8th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
It’s worth noting that, in September, the Thai government initiated a visa-free entry policy for tourists from China and Kazakhstan, allowing a 30-day stay, effective until the end of February next year.
