27-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of upholding media freedom to provide the public with fair and accurate news and information. He also stressed the need to tackle malicious deception and fake news, which can sow division and mistrust among the people.
The Prime Minister, who is also the Finance Minister, made these statements while announcing the “Ekonomi MADANI: Memperkasa Rakyat” (MADANI Economy: Empowering the Rakyat) initiative in the city.
Anwar reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing good governance in order to restore public confidence. He highlighted that achieving this goal requires the support and trust of all parties towards the government.
To realize the aspiration of good governance and an efficient service delivery system, Anwar underscored the necessity for immediate reforms in the country’s structure, systems, and institutions.
Moreover, he emphasized the need to grant the Dewan Rakyat a broader role in line with the ongoing Parliamentary reform efforts that were initiated in 2018. Anwar mentioned the formation of a Special Parliamentary Select Committee, which will play a crucial role in legislation and oversight through amendments to the Standing Orders.
The Prime Minister’s Question Session has also been introduced to foster direct interaction between the Prime Minister and honorable Members of Parliament from both the government and opposition.
Anwar assured continued cooperation with Parliament, including considering proposals to repeal outdated acts that no longer align with Malaysia MADANI aspirations.
