7-2-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has revealed that it has not yet received asset declarations from two sons of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
According to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir were issued notices to declare their assets, with a 30-day deadline provided from the date of issuance. However, Azam clarified that there is no specific deadline for the completion of the investigations.
Speaking to reporters during a media dialogue, Azam stated, “If they fail to declare their assets, they can be charged for that, but our main investigation will take time. There is no deadline for that.” He further noted that both individuals have been cooperative with MACC thus far.
Mirzan received the notice to declare his assets on Jan 17, while Mokhzani was served the notice on Jan 26. Previous reports indicated that the investigation into Mirzan was prompted by information uncovered in the Panama Papers, focusing on his business activities related to sales and purchases of government-linked companies.
Similarly, the probe into Mokhzani was said to involve a government-linked company, albeit unrelated to the investigation concerning Mirzan. Azam clarified that the declaration of assets forms a crucial part of both investigations, emphasizing, “It will take time before any charges are made as we have to complete our investigation first.”
Regarding Tun Daim Zainuddin, Azam mentioned that MACC’s investigation into the former finance minister is ongoing, despite Daim being charged for failing to declare his assets. Azam highlighted the challenge of investigating allegations from a long time ago, citing difficulties in obtaining documentation and witnesses.
Daim faced charges of failing to declare his assets to MACC in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Jan 29, where he pleaded not guilty.
