13-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) Amos Yee, a Singaporean citizen currently serving a jail term in the United States, has had his projected discharge date brought forward by over a year, according to prison records. As of Tuesday, December 12, Yee’s new projected discharge date is April 24, 2025, a significant change from his previous date of October 8, 2026.
Yee’s transfer from the maximum-security Stateville Correctional Center to the medium-security Danville Correctional Center was confirmed by a message from the victim notification network. The reasons behind the adjustment in Yee’s discharge date and his transfer to a different facility have yet to be disclosed.
In November, the 25-year-old was taken back into custody for violating the conditions of his parole, just a month after his initial release on October 7. Yee had been serving a six-year prison sentence for charges related to grooming a teenage girl online and soliciting explicit photographs from her.
The sentencing, which took place in December 2021, followed Yee’s guilty plea on charges of grooming and possessing child pornography. As part of a plea deal, sixteen other charges were dismissed. The jail term was backdated to his arrest in October 2020.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Yee had befriended the victim, a 14-year-old girl, in February 2019 when he was 20 years old. Despite being aware of her age, Yee persistently pressured her to send him nude photos and engaged in discussions about sexual fantasies and roleplay. His arrest took place in October 2020 at his apartment in Chicago, and he remained in custody until his sentencing.
Yee’s case has attracted attention due to his history. More than six years ago, he was granted asylum by a US immigration court, despite opposition from the Department of Homeland Security. In 2015, Yee had been imprisoned in Singapore for making remarks that offended religious sentiments, specifically targeting Christians. A year later, he faced similar charges for making derogatory comments about both Christians and Muslims.
