30-4-2024 (SINGAPORE) Abyan Imtiaz Ikriz, aged five, has made history as the youngest Singaporean to reach Everest Base Camp, accomplishing the feat alongside his father, Mr. Zikri Ali. They reached the camp, situated over 5,300 meters above sea level, two days earlier than anticipated, arriving safely on Monday (29 April).
As confirmed by the Singapore Book of Records, Abyan has surpassed the previous record held by Om Madan Garg, a six-year-old, who reached Mount Everest Base Camp on 7 Oct 2022. Om’s journey took 10 days, navigating through challenges like adverse weather conditions, flight disruptions, and a lack of basic amenities.

In an Instagram post celebrating their successful ascent to Everest Base Camp, Abyan’s caption reflected on the months of hard work, including training during Ramadan, culminating in this remarkable achievement. According to Berita Harian (BH), Abyan and his father trained rigorously four to five times a week, engaging in activities such as stair climbing, long-distance trekking, and hill-climbing at Bukit Timah.
Achieving Abyan’s dream required substantial financial support as well. Mr. Zikri revealed that he invested nearly S$10,000 to make his son’s dream a reality, enlisting local guides to assist with trip planning.
The father and son duo commenced their journey on foot to Everest Base Camp on 22 April, starting from Lukla, the town serving as the gateway for trekkers. Despite feeling nauseous due to continuous trekking and altitude changes, they monitored their oxygen levels and managed any discomfort with necessary medication.
Ms. War War, Abyan’s mother, eagerly awaited updates from her husband and son, navigating through unstable internet connections. However, Mr. Zikri ensured they were well-prepared, equipped with oxygen monitoring devices and altitude sickness medication.
“This journey is a profound learning experience in life, one that cannot be missed,” expressed Mr. Zikri, highlighting the invaluable lessons gained from their adventure.
